Legendary Somali musician Daud Ali Mashaf, famed for his mastery of the kaban (oud), and a lead singer in the famous Waaberi Band in the 1980s has passed on.
HOL has learnt that Mashaf died in Jigjiga in the Somali state of Ethiopia Friday but there was no immediate information on the circumstances regarding his death.
Born in Jowhar, Somalia, Mashaf was better known as Musbaah in his hometown where he grew up before launching a career in music in 1980s during the heydays of Somali music. He joined Waaberi Band which alongside other bands such as Dur Dur and Iftiin graced entertainment spaces and lives in Somalia in the 80s.
It was his adventure into the entertainment world that Musbaah adopted a new name-Mashaf, which would become a household name in Somali music halls of fame for years to come.
Besides his performances with Waaberi Band, Mashaf also produced his own songs which became hits in Somalia and across borders.
Like many artists of his ilk, Mashaf fled Somalia following the collapse of the central government in 1991 and moved to Djibouti where he spent most of his life.
